Last weekend Ania Grzelinska, Christian Brouwer and I headed to Nordwejk in Holland for the Kiteboard Open. This event started several years ago just as a bit of fun and now I guess with Holland being so small and with Germany and Belgium near by the event has just grown and is possibly one of the most popular kitesurfing events in the world.
The event was over the dutch Bank holiday weekend 11th and 12th of May. It was sponsored by Protest Clothing as well as Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream, US Eyewear and many other companies. Typically for whatever the event is the condition necessary just didn't arrive so in this case it was the wind which was a no show. However the sun blitzed us and we had a sweltering upper 20 degrees to marvel in.
The beach was lined with avid kitesurfing fans and interested people and there was plenty for all to see and do with all the kite stands that were present plus the soap slides, bouncy castles, surf simulators, prize give-aways, blasting music, free flowing drinks and bbq's. It was just a shame that no one could take to the water and show what the sport is about.
Next year the event will be back and bigger then ever and the orders are in for the wind!!
Right now I am back in the UK for a couple of weeks before heading somewhere to train for one week at the start of June and then home for another week before hitting the Dominican Republic for the next round of the PKRA.
